primary and secondary

primary:
A primary source is something original from that time period. It can include:

Newspaper article (if the reporter was there - an example, reporting from New Orleans about Hurricane Katrina - obituaries, birth and death notices)

Reports
Autobiographies
First-Person Accounts
Speeches



secondary
Secondary sources are things where people USE the primary sources in their work. For example, a modern author writing a book about the War of 1812 might use the Star Spangled Banner in his book
